But the same Gartner report includes a figure that deserves equal attention: 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027. The reason cited is not technical failure. It is scope problems. Teams building agents without clear definitions of what the agent is actually supposed to do, under what conditions, and how success gets measured.

This is a familiar pattern in enterprise software. The technology works. The implementation plan does not.

AI agents, in practice, are software systems that use language models to complete multi-step tasks with some degree of autonomy. They can browse the web, call APIs, write and run code, read documents, and chain those actions together to complete workflows that previously required human coordination.

The human reviews the output instead of completing each step. This is not science fiction. Teams are doing it now in procurement, customer support, content operations, and data analysis.

That brief is buildable. It has a clear success condition. It can be tested against real inputs before it touches production. Tight scope is not a limitation. It is the foundation that makes everything else work.

Define success criteria before you write a line of code

Every agent project needs three things defined upfront: what good output looks like (and what bad output looks like), what the acceptable error rate is, and who is accountable for reviewing outputs during the first 90 days.

Content briefing, data extraction, competitive monitoring, and internal routing workflows all fit this profile. Complex judgment tasks (brand decisions, strategic recommendations, customer escalations) are where agents struggle and where the 40% cancellation risk concentrates.

The practical implication: start with the structured, reviewable use case. Build trust with stakeholders by showing consistent, accurate outputs on a constrained task. Expand scope incrementally once the feedback loop is established and the error rate is understood.
