What Is Claude Code and Why Every Marketer Should Use It

Claude Code is Anthropic's official agentic AI tool — and it's not a chatbot. It reads your files, remembers your brand, and runs full marketing workflows from a single slash command. Here's everything you need to know to get started.

TL;DR: Claude Code is Anthropic's official agentic AI tool — not a chatbot. It reads your project files, remembers your brand context, and executes repeatable marketing workflows through slash commands called Skills. Unlike ChatGPT, it doesn't reset every session. Marketing teams using agentic AI tools report a 75% reduction in time spent on repetitive analysis (Stormy AI, 2026). This guide covers exactly what it is, how it works, and how to start using it today — even if you've never opened a terminal.

Ninety-one per cent of marketers now actively use AI in their work — up from 63% just twelve months ago (LoopexDigital, 2026). But most of them are doing the same thing: opening a tab, typing a prompt, copying an output, and starting over the next day with zero memory of what came before.

That's not a workflow. That's a copy-paste machine.

Claude Code is different. It's Anthropic's official command-line tool — an AI agent that reads your files, understands your brand context, executes tasks autonomously, and runs repeatable workflows through custom commands you define once and use forever.

I've been using it daily for over a year. I built two downloadable skill packs specifically for marketers — the AI Marketing Suite and the Blog Content Engine — and I use Claude Code to run campaigns, analyse performance, plan content, and brief creative work at VenueNow, Australia's leading venue booking marketplace.

This is everything I wish I'd known on day one.

What Is Claude Code — and Why Does It Feel Different From the Start?

Seventy per cent of Fortune 100 companies now use Claude as of 2026 (getpanto.ai, 2026), and most of them aren't using it through a chat interface. They're using it through agentic tools — systems that can act on files, systems, and data without constant manual prompting. Claude Code is exactly that.

At its core, Claude Code is Anthropic's official CLI (command-line interface). You run it from a terminal — a text-based window on your computer — and it operates as an agent rather than a chatbot. The difference matters enormously in practice.

A chatbot answers questions. An agent completes tasks.

Claude Code can:

  • Read every file in your marketing project folder
  • Write and edit documents, copy, briefs, and reports directly to disk
  • Browse the web to research competitors, headlines, and market data
  • Execute multi-step workflows from a single command
  • Remember everything about your brand, audience, and strategy — permanently
  • Run custom slash commands that trigger complete marketing workflows

That last point is the one most marketers miss on the first pass. You're not just talking to Claude. You're building a system that runs the same way every time, gets smarter as you add context, and can be shared with anyone on your team.

The shift that matters: Every AI chat tool resets when you close the tab. Claude Code doesn't. Your brand voice, campaign history, audience profiles, and strategic context persist across every session. That's not a feature — it's a fundamentally different relationship with AI.

How Is Claude Code Different From ChatGPT and Claude.ai for Marketers?

Marketing teams that have moved to agentic AI tools like Claude Code report 44% higher productivity and an average saving of 11 hours per week compared to those using standard chat interfaces (LoopexDigital, 2026). That gap exists for three specific reasons: memory, file access, and extensibility.

Here's the honest comparison:

FeatureChatGPT / Claude.aiClaude Code
Session memoryResets every conversationPersistent via CLAUDE.md + project files
File accessManual upload onlyReads your entire project folder automatically
Custom workflowsNo — prompt each timeYes — slash commands via Skills
Takes action on filesNoYes — writes, edits, creates files directly
Brand contextRe-enter every sessionLoaded from CLAUDE.md at every start
Repeatable outputsManual prompting each timeCodified into Skills — run once, use forever
Multi-step workflowsStep-by-step promptingSingle command executes full workflow

When I switched from using Claude.ai to Claude Code at VenueNow, the first thing I noticed wasn't the speed — it was the consistency. Our campaign briefs stopped varying in quality depending on how detailed my prompt was that day. The context was already there. Claude knew our audience, our tone, our competitive positioning, and our current focus areas from the moment I opened a session. I hadn't typed a single word of context.

That's what CLAUDE.md does. And we'll get to that in a moment.

The second thing I noticed: I stopped losing work. Every output — briefs, copy, research notes, reports — was written directly to my project folder. No more copying from chat windows into documents. No more losing a brilliant output because the tab crashed. Claude Code writes to disk. Your files are always there.

For marketers who write regularly, this alone is worth the switch.

The Two Features That Change How You Work: Skills and CLAUDE.md

Companies using AI-driven marketing automation see a 15–20% reduction in customer acquisition costs (Incremys, 2026). The ones seeing the biggest gains aren't just using better AI — they're building systems that run consistently without constant re-prompting. Skills and CLAUDE.md are how you build those systems in Claude Code.

CLAUDE.md — Your Brand's Permanent Brain

CLAUDE.md is a plain text file you create in your project folder. Claude reads it automatically at the start of every session. Write it once, and it loads every time — no prompting required.

What should you put in your CLAUDE.md? Everything Claude needs to be useful without asking:

  • Who you are and what your business does
  • Your target audience — their role, pain points, language they use
  • Your brand voice and tone ("direct and warm, not corporate")
  • Your current strategic focus and active campaigns
  • Competitors to be aware of
  • Key metrics you care about
  • Any rules you always want followed (e.g., Australian English, no jargon)

Mine has roughly 400 words. It took me 30 minutes to write. Since then, I've never once had to re-explain VenueNow's positioning, audience, or tone to Claude. Every brief, every piece of copy, every analysis starts from a shared foundation. That's 30 minutes of setup that's saved me hours every single week.

Skills — Slash Commands That Run Full Workflows

Claude Code Skills are instruction files — plain markdown — that you drop into a folder called .claude/skills/. Once installed, they're triggered by a slash command like /market audit or /blog write.

When you run a skill, Claude doesn't just answer a question. It executes a full workflow: reads your context, researches what's needed, produces outputs in your format, and writes them to your project files. A single command that previously took 2–3 hours of back-and-forth prompting runs in minutes.

I built two skill packs specifically for marketers:

  • AI Marketing Suite — 13 commands covering auditing, copywriting, email sequences, social media, ads, funnel analysis, competitive intelligence, and landing page CRO
  • Blog Content Engine — 12 commands for full-lifecycle blog management: writing, rewriting, SEO analysis, image sourcing, AI citation optimisation, and editorial planning

Both are free. You can download them from the Skills page.

Skills aren't plugins. They're not integrations. They're markdown files. If you want to customise them — change the output format, add your specific brand rules, adjust the workflow — you just edit the file. No code required.

Four Marketing Use Cases — What It Looks Like in Practice

AI campaigns now deliver 22% better ROI and 32% more conversions than traditional marketing methods (SalesGroup AI, 2026). But the gap isn't in having better AI — it's in how that AI is used. These are the four areas where Claude Code makes the biggest practical difference for marketing teams.

1. Campaign Briefs in 10 Minutes

A complete campaign brief used to take me the better part of a morning. Audience, objective, channel mix, messaging framework, content plan, KPIs, timeline. By the time it was finished, half the day was gone.

With Claude Code and a /market brief skill, I describe the campaign in plain language, and within minutes I have a structured brief — grounded in our brand context from CLAUDE.md, informed by the competitive landscape, and formatted the way we actually use it. I review and adjust. I don't write from scratch.

The first time I ran this at VenueNow, the brief came back with a channel recommendation I hadn't considered — LinkedIn retargeting to warm corporate event planners, specifically targeting people who had visited our "corporate events" category pages. It was right. We ran it. It performed above our benchmark. The AI found the gap in my thinking because it had full context of our business and the brief simultaneously — something I was doing sequentially in my head.

2. SEO Content That Doesn't Need Rewriting

Most AI-written content needs heavy editing because the AI doesn't know your voice, your angle, or your audience deeply enough. Claude Code with a CLAUDE.md changes that.

The Blog Content Engine skill runs a full workflow: target keyword, audience intent, outline, draft, internal links, metadata, schema markup. The output is formatted for your CMS. The voice matches your brand. The sources are cited. The SEO structure is correct.

I still read and edit everything. But the editing is now the last 20% of the work, not the entire job.

3. Competitive Research in One Command

Run /market competitors [URL], and Claude Code visits the competitor's site, analyses their messaging, positioning, channel presence, and product differentiation, then produces a structured brief. What used to take two hours of tab-switching and note-taking now takes under ten minutes.

The output lands in a file in your project folder. It's there when you need it, updated when you want it. No screenshots in a Notion page. No notes you can't find two weeks later.

4. Performance Reporting That Tells You What to Do

Paste in your channel data — ad spend, conversions, CPAs, click rates — and ask Claude Code to analyse it and surface the three highest-leverage optimisation decisions. It reads across all the numbers simultaneously, flags the anomalies, and explains the reasoning.

This is where agentic AI genuinely earns its place. It doesn't just summarise the numbers. It interprets them in the context of your goal, your audience, and your historical performance — because all of that context is in your CLAUDE.md and project files.

The AI Marketing Suite and Blog Content Engine — What's Actually in Them

I built these two skill packs because I needed them myself. Everything in them is something I run in real campaigns and real content production. They're not theoretical.

AI Marketing Suite — 13 Commands

The AI Marketing Suite covers the full breadth of marketing execution:

  • /market audit — Full marketing audit with prioritised recommendations
  • /market copy — Conversion-focused copy generation with brand voice
  • /market emails — Complete email sequences (welcome, nurture, re-engagement)
  • /market social — Social content calendar and post copy
  • /ads google / /ads meta / /ads linkedin — Platform-specific ad analysis
  • /market funnel — Funnel analysis and optimisation recommendations
  • /market competitors — Structured competitive intelligence
  • /market landing — Landing page CRO analysis

Blog Content Engine — 12 Commands

The Blog Content Engine manages the full content lifecycle:

  • /blog write — Full article from brief to publish-ready draft
  • /blog analyze — 100-point quality scoring across content, SEO, E-E-A-T, and AI citation readiness
  • /blog rewrite — Optimise and refresh existing posts
  • /blog seo-check — On-page SEO validation
  • /blog brief — Detailed content brief from a target keyword
  • /blog calendar — Editorial calendar generation

Both are free to download and install. You'll find them on the Skills page, along with full installation instructions.

According to Jasper's State of AI in Marketing 2026 report, 93% of marketers now use AI to generate content faster, yet only 19.7% have deployed agentic tools to automate full workflows (Jasper, 2026). The gap between "using AI" and "running AI-powered systems" is where most marketing teams are leaving the most time and output on the table.

How to Get Started — Even If You've Never Used a Terminal

Eighty-eight per cent of marketers increased their AI automation budgets in 2025 (SalesGroup AI, 2026), but adoption of agentic tools lags because they sound technical. They're not — or at least they don't have to be. Here's the full setup in five steps.

Step 1: Install Claude Code

Go to claude.ai/code. Follow the installation instructions for your operating system (Mac or Windows). It takes about five minutes. You'll need a Claude account — the free tier works to start, though the Pro or Max plans give you more usage.

Step 2: Open a marketing project folder

Create a folder on your computer for your marketing work. Something like my-marketing/. Open your terminal, navigate to that folder, and type claude. That's it. Claude Code starts and immediately reads everything in that folder.

If "open your terminal" sounds intimidating — on a Mac, press ⌘ + Space, type "Terminal," and press Enter. You're there. On Windows, search for "Command Prompt." You'll type one command. That's the hard part, and it's not that hard.

Step 3: Create your CLAUDE.md

Create a new file called CLAUDE.md in your project folder. Write a few paragraphs about your business: who you serve, what you sell, your tone of voice, your current marketing focus, and any rules you always want Claude to follow. Save it. Claude will read it every time you start a session.

Step 4: Download a skill

Head to matheusvizotto.com/skills and download the AI Marketing Suite or Blog Content Engine. Follow the installation instructions (it's a folder copy — one step). The skills are now available as slash commands.

Step 5: Run your first command

Type /market audit and describe your business or paste in your website URL. Watch Claude run a full marketing audit, grounded in your CLAUDE.md context, in minutes. That's your first agentic marketing workflow. It gets more useful from here.

The first command I ever ran in Claude Code was a competitive brief. I typed /market competitors and pasted a competitor URL. What came back was more thorough than anything I'd built manually — messaging analysis, positioning gaps, channel presence, strategic opportunities. I had a team of one running analysis that used to require two days and a strategy consultant. That was the moment I stopped thinking of Claude Code as a tool and started thinking of it as infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

No. Claude Code runs from a terminal, but the only command you need to know is claude to start it, and then you work in plain English. Skills are markdown files, not code. CLAUDE.md is plain text. You're managing an AI workflow, not writing software. The "Code" in Claude Code refers to Anthropic's CLI tool, not programming.

How is Claude Code different from Claude.ai?

Claude.ai is a browser-based chatbot that resets every conversation. Claude Code is an agent that reads your project files, maintains persistent context via CLAUDE.md, writes outputs directly to disk, and runs customisable workflows via Skills. It's the difference between asking an AI a question and building an AI-powered system for your marketing operations. Teams using agentic AI like Claude Code report 44% higher productivity versus standard chat tools (LoopexDigital, 2026).

What are Claude Code Skills and how do they work?

Skills are markdown instruction files stored in a .claude/skills/ folder in your project. You trigger them with a slash command — /blog write, /market audit, /ads google. When triggered, Claude executes the full workflow defined in the skill file: researching, drafting, formatting, and writing outputs to your project. You write the skill once; it runs the same way every time. The AI Marketing Suite has 13 pre-built skills for marketers.

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code requires a Claude subscription. The Pro plan (currently USD $20/month) gives you substantial usage for most marketing workflows. The Max plan (USD $100/month) is better if you're running high-volume content production or multiple daily workflow sessions. The Skills themselves — including the AI Marketing Suite and Blog Content Engine — are free to download.

Can Claude Code replace my existing marketing tools?

Not entirely — and it's not designed to. Think of it as your AI operator layer that sits above your existing tools. You still use Google Ads, your CMS, your email platform. What Claude Code replaces is the time between strategy and execution: the briefing, the drafting, the analysis, the reporting interpretation. It's the 40–60% of marketing time that's cognitive overhead, not platform management. That's where the 11 hours per week in savings comes from (LoopexDigital, 2026).

The Bottom Line

Claude Code is not a better chatbot. It's a different category of tool entirely — one that works like a system rather than a conversation.

For marketers, the shift matters because our work is repetitive and context-heavy. We run the same types of briefs, analyses, and reports every week. We have brand voices, audience profiles, and strategic contexts that should inform every output. We need consistency, not just speed.

CLAUDE.md solves the context problem. Skills solve the consistency problem. Together, they turn Claude Code into a marketing operations layer that gets better the more you use it.

The 91% of marketers using AI daily are mostly in chat mode. The ones pulling ahead are in agent mode. That gap is only going to widen.

  • Start with a CLAUDE.md: 30 minutes, permanent impact
  • Install one skill: the AI Marketing Suite is the best first step
  • Run one workflow this week: a competitive brief or a campaign plan
  • See what 11 hours per week back actually feels like

The Skills page has everything you need to get started — free downloads, installation guides, and documentation. If you want to understand more about how I use Claude Code in my own marketing work, the About page has the full background. And if you have questions, get in touch — I reply to all of them.
